It is an exciting time for gamers as Rockstar Games has confirmed that a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto Series is underway. This news is something that some people thought would not be announced for a long time yet, as GTA 5's success is still running strong almost ten years after its initial release, all the way back in 2013.
Rockstar Games took to social media to announce this statement:
"Many of you have been asking about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we've previously delivered. We're pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the series is underway.
We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details. On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and cannot wait to step into the future with you!"
The studio has not commented any more about the new GTA, or any sort of release date. There are rumours suggesting that the game could release in 2024, which would mean an 11 year gap between entries. This next GTA will also be the first in the series released after the departure of Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, who helped write all of the GTA games from 2 to 5, as well as the critically acclaimed Red Dead series, Max Payne 3 and Bully. Sam Houser, Dan's brother however, still remains behind this new GTA.
It is also unknown how long the game has been in development. Back in November 2021, IGN reported that Rockstar had patented a new system for NPC navigation. "The patent application, entitled ‘System And Method For Virtual Navigation In A Gaming Environment’, was filed by Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two". This new system is said to result in a more realistic and immersive simulation of traffic and NPCs, stating that "each NPC can define its own specific characteristics for traversing the road nodes".
This could mean a lot of things. It could mean that GTA 6 has only been in development for just over a year or so, or could have even begun the early stages of development after GTA 5's release, or after Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018.
There is much speculation and theories as to where this new entry will be set, what time period and if it will even be a multiplayer experience only. We will all have to be patient and wait for more news from Rockstar, and hope this new GTA will have critical and audience success like Red Dead Redemption 2, and not the critical panning of their most recent Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The definitive Edition release.
